Online Discussion #2

Hello everyone,

This week's online discussion will be on the following topic:

Should junk food be banned from schools?
Everyone should write an original opinion and respond to the idea of at least one other student.  Think also of the different perspectives of the people that might be affected by this decision.

All opinions should be included as comments to this post.

So, who will lead this week's discussion to be summarized in class next Tuesday?

=-)

  1. Before talking about "Should junk food be banned from schools?", I would like to share u guys a new study research. That shows "Global obesity rate doubles since 1980"! Moreover, since about 20 years ago, junk food has been discussed and defined as one of the main reasons to cause obesity, and overweight causes heart disease, diabetes, cancers and other disorders. Additionally, junk food only provide calorific capacity (calory) not nutrition that are need for grow up.

After these information, what do u think about "should junk food be banned from schools or not"? For me, I will say "depends"! It should depend on ages; for examples, junk food should be banned from junior high schools and primary schools, and even kindergarten also. However, it should not be banned from high schools and above high schools but also could not be merchandised in high schools. The reason is youngsters do not have completed ability to distinguish right from wrong, and mature years people have responsibility to bear any outcome that comes from the decision they made. However, while the junk food are banned from schools, the most influence is the pocket of junk food dealers. The next would be parents because parents have to pay more attention to their children's diet and prepare nutrient food for them, and they also can not just give them money without concern as before.

Well, above are what I think about junk food should be banned from school or not, and I am quite happy to know your thinking and argument.

  4. i don't think junk food should be banned...junk food means fast. in the univeristy most students are busy doing their homework, eassy, assignment, etc. they have to take advantage of all kinds of resources in the school to get to their academy acchivement. so they have to take every second to do research and read....so fast food is good for them, no one want to take 3 hours to ecjoy an italian food.....it's healthy, delicious, romantic, but not fit for them. if they want to balance their diet, after back home or when they relax ,they can cook by themselves..... junk food's target customer is for busy people.....students need them, so schools provide them.....reasonable

  5. I agree with Tsai and Olivia in few views.
Junk food are popular because it easy to make and easy to consume. The time is a main factor. junk food means fast, as Olivia said that student can’t spend more time to enjoy their lunch in school, the best choose is fast food, such as burger, hotdog, potato wafers or Chips, these kind of foods do not need cooking or heating. Fast food meets the demands of the people’s fast life rhythm in the modern world.
Its doubt fact that junk causing ill effects on the health for people. For the school, should set a good menu of nutritious easting for the student. When the student study in school, is away from their parents, the function of the school as parent that monitor the student’s diet, should do what the best for the student. The disadvantage of consuming junk food is contains high of oil and fat. It’s no benefit to provide energy for human body.
I think junk food is impossible to disappear in the future. It need to depend, nut just depend on the age; also depend on individual eating habits. If junk food banned from schools, student still can eat junk food before and after school.

  6. In recently society, junk food has an increasing negative effect on human's health. Such as fat, disease … The children is growing up, they need energy. What's the worst thing is many schools have been involved in this problem. So a view that junk food must be banned in the school at all.
I do not agree with Olivia's opinion. In my opinion, firstly, junk food not only means the fast, but also represents less nutrition. As we all know, there are many material which can cause many sickness, for instance, many potato chips can increase the cancer disease. Secondly, healthy food is also easy to get, such as sandwich which we can save time also has nutrition.
In conclusion, we'd better keep far away with the junk food, especially the students.

  7. Uhhh...I think "junk food" might not be "fast food," but most "fast food" might be classified as "junk food"! I will define "junk food" as the food only provide calories or sugar without too much nutrition, and "fast food" as the food is served quickly and decrease the customer's eating time. Thus, such McDonald's or KFC or Burger King is the junk food and fast food also; however, is Subway one of the fast food? Yes, it absolutely is, but, meanwhile, is it one of junk food as well? I don't think so because it does not providing only calories but also much more veges as nutrition. Hence, school should have another choices for fast food but not junk food! Well, based on these and above, I will say I hold the same situation as Julie but not as Olivia.

  9. I think school should not banned junk food completely. Junk food is already parts of school life and it also has some benefits. For school, though junk food doesn’t need any kitchen to cook, they could control cost of equipment and labour. Also, because it’s easy to sell and can keep for a long time, it reduces the risk, and what is more, profits of junk foods helps schools operation.
However, eating junk food endlessly is absolutely harmful. So school can add some functions of student’s ID card such as recording function. When students buy something from canteen or vending machine, they need to insert student ID to record before they buy it. When the student was eating too much in school, counsellor or school doctor could give guidance to the student and their parents. If student has a difficulty to allow this suggestion, school or parents could band to buy unhealthy food in school by student ID system. I think this is the best way to make school profit and reduce overweight child.

  10. I partly agree with Tsai’s opinion. I agree that "junk food" might not be "fast food," but most "fast food" might be classified as "junk food". And junk food is absolutely bad for our health. But it can’t be banned from school because it already becomes a necessary part of our daily life. It is delicious and convenient for students on campus. It is no need to ban it from school. We have the right to eat junk food at school. And it is hard to banned junk food from school because we have various kinds of junk food. We can’t ban all of them from school. In conclusion, though junk food is bad for us, but we still need junk food and it is hard to ban all of the junk food from school.

  11. I don't support that junk food should be banned from school. As for students who don't have enough time to have a meal , the junk food seems to be fast food, despite low nutrition. Ban of junk food from school is unnecessary affairs that can't completely solve any problem about health because many young people nowadays prefer junk food as eating habits. Otherwise, main foods of some countries are included in junk food, suppose such food will be banned from school~ can you have another foods instead?
overall, I also realize that the junk food is low in nutrition but ban of junk food from school is not reasonable approach to change student's eating habits. Sometimes, it may make student that refuse to have a meal at school besides affact their study.

  12. I think junk food should be banned from schools, but it's have a lot of difficulty thing. The reason is very simple, in which the student need it when they study on campus. So, I agree with the point of Olivia.
As we all know, the junk food are included Hamburgers,Potato chips,Fried chicken,Hot dogs, etc.they have low mineral, low vitamin, low dietary fibers,high-calorie,high-fat,high-protein. If we eat it too much,it's will harm for our heathly. On the other hand,it's very convenicent and deliclous compare to some heathly food. Many student choose it when they eat at school.
In my opinion, the school should ban the junk food.In fact, it's very difficulty to school, so that the school should provide more heathly food for student such as:fruits, vegetables, bread, ect. This is good way that it will give students more choose when they want to eat something.

  13. In my opinion, now day's, junk food is one of the diseases prevalent in the world. It is so bad for health.I think all schools around the world have to banned junk food and discuss how to convert these foods into useful, quick and easy at the same time.

  14. School should gives more choose to student
select which food are they prefer to eat. For example, most university have canteen and bar. some student choose junk food cause they are busy at study, they can not
waitting for a long time for food, so they
choose junk food. other student have enough times to care about their health, so they are select healthy food. This is the reason why I think junk food shouldn't ban in school.

  15. I agree with Tsai's opinion, about junk food this problem it should depends on the situations. Sometimes we have too many lessons and cannot eat meal in enough time. Maybe at that time the junk food is a good way to choose. And it's really easy to finish them in a shorter time. And most schools have junk food stores for students. Some are really delicious. Moreover students need to spend some energy on haveing classes, they might feel hungry when they finish several lessons. Then the junk food between the rest time of two classes is the best choice for students.
However, we all know the junk food is not good for our health. They cannot give us the energy and power what we need. For parents, they dont hope we always eat these food at all. Actually, we all know this clearly but we still need them. It's really make us confused. Maybe someday a new kind healthy food will be created for students. I'm waiting for it ¬.¬

  16. In fact, my opinion more approach to Jason's. Junk food is easier to take away and more convenient for students but it has seriously healthy problems.

  17. I think that junk foods should be banned and the reasons are as follows.

    1. Students need to be feel a heath well balanced diet in order to proper stimulate growth mentally as well as physically. To much sugars and fats slow down the body's metabolism leading to lethargic and uninterested students.

    2. The only reasons schools are introducing junk food it the junk food companies pay out big bucks to School districts to allow them the opportunity to market the younger generations. Student's health is not for sale due to their greed.

3- Nutrition - teaching good nutrition teaches life long habits of good eating.
